    Garmin 265WT and Mac queries

    Hi Jan,

I'm here right now in Milan for a business trip and will be back to Manila by June 4, 2009. I,m new to this navigator thing and the moment i saw how the Garmin navigator works perfectly in Milan Italy, I immediately bought a Garmin Nuvi 265WTwithout considering if Garmin maps for Philippines are available as well. I tried to contact the Garmin staff but they informed me its not yet available which landed me in this forum.

I read the forums and was wondering if options two is still possible. I believe you guys have done a wonderful job and i wanna treat you guys for some good time. I understand that to be able to get an updated maps , i need to be a data contributor but somehow because of my business, I dont know if i would be able to do it considering that i need to learn all off this stuff.

I would really really appreciate if you guys can help me out here. You can contact me at my email address : alvatec@gmail.com or please send me an idiot procedure to be able to learn and hopefully be contributor in the near future.

What is option 2? Getting the updated map by treating us? Nah, that was meant as a joke. Nobody ever got a better map that way. This is a contributor driven project and it will always be (unless the big man thinks otherwise in the distant future).

There are many businessman members here and yet they are able to give some of their time to contribute. So with all due respect sir, I believe you can do as well or even better. And since you have indicated your willingness to learn contributing, then by all means the support of the moderators and contributors are behind you in this endeavor.

To start with, please read the How To's section and if you still have some things in mind needing clarification, feel free to ask in the forums or you can send a pm to any mods/contributors and we will gladly assist you. And when you come back from Italy, please download the free version of the map to get a feel of the initial work people have done here.

    Btw, welcome to the forum.

      Hi Pok,

Thanks for your prompt reply. TO begin with I have downloaded the 1.01 version since im a mac user. However everytime i open my garmin , i get a message " map cant not be unlock" . I understand that this is a demo map only just to let me know if the data that im about to contribute is already existing.

I look forward to your usual prompt reply

Yes, you're correct that it's for comparison purposes only. And it can't be loaded to your nuvi. You can only view it in mapsource. Please read this post in order to be able to use mapsource in a mac...http://roadguide.ph/forums/showthread.php?t=603

            Hi Pok/Borgie

Please assist. Im surprise I was able to load both version ( Philippine routable 5.17 and roadguide.ph demo map 1.01 successfully to my Nuvi. However, on both maps i.e metro manila, I can only see a straight line from Manila to Quezon City. Is this because im still in Italy ?

If however i open the roadtrip software, i can see the street level maps. Am i doing everything correctly? Are POI's and way points the same thing? i mean way points if your using a map source on windows and POI if your a Mac user?

Appreciate to get some pointer from you guys. Getting very excited to try this at home.

Hi Alvatec. I've no experience with the Nuvi but i think basically it's the same as XT. How did you load the 2 maps mentioned in the Nuvi? Did it overwrite your existing map? As mentioned in the Nuvi threads, only a gmapsupp.img file containing your preferred map can be read by the Nuvi. If you loaded the older 5.17 gmapsupp.img, you should be able to see it just fine in the Nuvi as this is an unlocked map. The demo is for viewing and reference only in Mapsource and can't be loaded in any GPS device, afaik, and you can't do searches or autorouting with it. And if you haven't unlocked the map in Mapsource, you'll be seing straight lines instead of curvy roads. But this is with Mapsource, i haven't done it with a Mac yet as well.

Btw, POI or points of interest and waypoints are more or less the same. You mark a POI using the waypoint tool. After the waypoint's been properly labelled and assigned an appropriate symbol, it can also be called a POI and moreso if it's incorporated in the map.

Hope we'll be seeing your contributions in the roadguide map in the near future...

Please try to zoom in on the maps on your Nuvi. Streets should appear. In this forum, we tend to use POIs and waypoints in the same breadth, although in stricter terms there are technical differences between the two.

                  Hi Guys,

Home at last. I was able to load Philippine route version 5.17 successfully to my GPS unit without any problem now. You have to zoom the map first before you make a transfer. Ive also tested it and works ok except it does not say abou tthe streets though. I hope i can be able to contribute some ways points or POI's. Would POI be ok ?

BTW, who is this company Benta serbisyo? What is the difference between our maps and the maps they sell? Any clarifications will be highly appreciated guys.

Waypoints and POI's more or less refer to the same thing. Basically, you mark a waypoint using your GPS device for a point of interest (say a gas station). Once that waypoint is incorporated in the map, it is usually referred to as POI. POI contributions are very much welcome and will earn you contributor status if the quality and quantity contributed is deemed sufficient by the Judge.

Benta serbisyo? Never heard of it or their maps.

                      Hi Guys,

For Metro Manila road guide, I cant find any difference between the maps between Philippine 5.17 ( free version ) and Roadguide demo 1.01 ( contributor maps) except for a few POI. Appreciate some clarifications.

                      Thanks

Why compare the free map with the demo map v1.01 when there's the latest demo map v1.06. Try that first then see how it goes ...

                          Hi Borgie,

I would appreciate if you can paste the link to this version 1.06. or perhaps its V1.06 on windows but its a V1.01 on the mac ? Can i upload this verion ( 1.06 ) to the GPS or for viewing only on roadtrip? How many versions are there all in all?

Further, i was able to set my nuvi at 1 sec interval. These data were saved save in the Garmin/logs folder and the screen shots at scr folder. Are these the file that i have to upload? or should i have to edit these files before uploading ?

                          Please advice.

1 sec tracks can be contributed and uploaded as long as they're not yet on the demo map v1.06 or is of higher resolution than that in the demo map road/track. Would be best if it's edited prior to uploading as well. Please read the FAQ's and "How to's" before uploading files. TIA

Thanks for the links Borgie and like i said, V 1.01 is the latest Version for the Mac and V 1.06 for Windows. Im a mac user so i have the V 1.01 ( the latest of mac i supposed) and I cant see any difference if i compare this to the Philippine routable map V 5.17 in terms of POI or road maps. Im not sure about the route because i can test it on my GPS. Im refering to Metro Manila maps only. So what else to contribute for Metro Manila Area? One way ? buildings ? wrong roads? please advice.
