    Installing with Ubuntu

I have been a user of Ubuntu (Linux) for a few years now, but I do use windows based PC when contributing through Mapsource and other programs that are mostly windows based.

Just now I was able to try to install:

    Training Center
    Mapsource 6.15.7

Through "WINE" (Linux's Windows Emulator) on a unit running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

    My report is this:

    1. Training Center was installed no problem.
    2. Mapsource 6.15.7 installed without any problem.
    3. Garmin Nuvi 1350 was detected and can be browsed (using Ubuntu) with no problem.

The G icon even came out on bottom right side of the screen, as what usually happens with Windows.

    Some problems:
    1. Error during installation of 1.07 map ("Error no program is set to open this file") or something to that effect.

    2. Error installing Contributor's map 1.24 same as above.

    3. I tried a different map from a different source, installation worked.

However, after opening Mapsource, I noticed that mapsource is unusually slow and tended to "Hang" the maps for RG was not there (caused by the Errors) but the other free map from different source was shown okay, though mapsource as mentioned is slow.

Checking download/upload icon, and tried to "search for device" it was not successful.

Anyways installation is okay for the software, our map as of now does not get installed due to an error. Mapsource is very slow though.

Will update from time to time

    Hello Sir Arvin,

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 Maveric Meerkat for few months now and Installed Mapsource 6.15.7 same as you did. And sad to say I have encountered the same problems as you did.
I found a solution on Ubuntu forums but havent tried it yet. Perhaps you can try it first and tell me if this works:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ight=mapsource

(I hope this is safe to post here as it doesn't deal with hacks cracks or keygen)

Johnny, thanks for your input, I will test it out tomorrow, I just transferred to my Win7 laptop to prepare some contributions

I also did some googling and most of the info that I found, including the link that you sent, never bothered installing Training center, so I think that is what is preventing me from seeing a ttyUSB that was mentioned, my 1350 is being detected by Ubuntu as both an SD card and a USB memory stick.

I tried uninstalling Training center, but I ran in some errors and thus no uninstall.

Nope it is not under a hack/keygen category. Don't worry

I want to get mapsource to detect the Garmin unit first before I even start bugging our Admins for info about possible solution to errors when installing our RG map exe files.

Oh, please don't call me Sir, sir!

Lastly, great choice of OS, hahaha, patting your back at the same mine, but I love Ubuntu, slowly getting others infected by the Ubuntu bug myself, I count 4 "victims" so far.

server so far so good it was online for 3 years now 24/7

I just Upgraded to Natty with a clean install, it's not bad but i kind of like the Meerkat with all the Compiz and Cube gears I am always proud to show my friends (managed to convert 4 of them already).
I know I can choose "Classic" before login, but I read that it will screw up Unity if I activate Compiz Cube, so I'm trying to give Natty a chance (^_^). Maybe I will like it in a few weeks time or maybe I'll just go back to 10.10 or 10.04

Ahaha! You are the Cutting edge type that want the latest version My friend who got me into Ubuntu is like you, gets the Beta version whenever it is out. I on the other hand am very conservative, heck the 4 that I have converted to Ubuntu are still using Jaunty, which is actually my favorite.

Hey as you have a clean install why not try to install mapsource?

Kuya Elkabong, welcome to the club hehehe!

Oh my nephew's school actually teaches their students Ubuntu in computer class, that is why he was so surprised when he saw my PC at home, he was very comfortable with the interface, too bad that apparently they will use Mac this year What a downgrade!

Latest info from my friend who I mentioned above, who is also going to join RG, is that he tried installing mapsource and found that it is too slow and crashes (same as my observation), the problem is he did what we all did, used Training center, when all references that we have for Ubuntu that are successful, never talked about Training center!

another alternative to wine is Crossover by codeweaver its not free though.
But some users say that they was able to run mapsource 6.15 through its bottle Functionality(virtual windows environment).

The guy who got me using Ubuntu suggested Virtual box, the only draw back with this is that you still have to install windows into it. Almost like dual booting but without having to reboot.

I still havent installed Wine and winetricks on my Ubuntu Natty because of the soft reset/reboot hang problem that my mainboard(intel D5252MW) is having. there is a solution to modify the boot loader or upgrade my bios, I dont want to touch my Bios at the moment so I will do the first option in a few days when i have more time :-)

                        Take your time I am!

Actually Kotzilla who is the guy who got me into ubuntu became a recent contributor and he actually went dual boot and used Windows, just because he also noticed that mapsource was quite slow with wine, slow as in when you browse the map, the movement is slow. I noticed this as well as per my first report.

Haven't had time to install or try Virtual box.

Above post got me thinking, maybe the reason why we are not able to make this thing work with Ubuntu is because I for one am trying to load the 6.15.7 map, when all of the instructions for ubuntu says 6.13.

                          Will try soon I hope.

                          Best regards!

Still haven't been able to make Mapsource detect my GPSR, but I was able to find a fix to an error (thanks to Kotzilla) when installing the RG map.

For some reason after I installed Mapsource, I could install OSM without any problem, but I encountered problems installing the RG 1.07 and the latest contri map.

The exe file will work okay until at the end where there will be an error that says: "There is no windows program configured to open this type of file" and of course the map does not show in mapsource.

The fix is actually quite easy.

Go to wine, browse to C: Drive and then go to windows directory.
(alternatively just open a terminal and type regedit)
Once regedit is working, click on Registry on the menu and choose Import registry file.

Then browse through the drive looking for the roadguid.reg
which should be found in c:/jklinc/ folder
                            Click okay
There may or may not be a confirmation that registry is imported.
Close all programs and restart Ubuntu.

After restart, open mapsource and you should be able to see the new map in there as a choice.

I wonder if any Ubuntu/Linux Users have tried this map software that is apparently an alternative to Mapsource:

                              http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/qlandkarte

Some more info and possible solution to my problem that mapsource still cannot detect my device in Ubuntu, trying it now:

yet another possible solution to running mapsource in ubuntu this time using Virtual box:
