DAMAGED | Pasig-Potrero bridge on SCTEX impassable to all vehicles

(UPDATED 9:10 p.m.) Strong water currents on the swollen Pasig-Potrero river as a result of monsoon rains enhanced by typhoon Maring have damaged a bridge on an expressway that connects Metro Manila to provinces in Central Luzon, the company running the highway said on Tuesday.

The abutment part of the Pasig-Potrero Bridge on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) - the Philippines’ longest expressway - has suffered a breach, the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) said on its Twitter account.

Here's how the Bases Conversion Development authority (BCDA) explained the cause of the erosion of the embankment: "Record rainfall for the past few days has resulted in strong currents
along the Pasig Potrero River, causing the saturation and erosion of the properties adjacent to Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) and redirection of the current to the approach of the Pasig Potrero
Bridge, thus leading to the erosion of the embankment."

A section of SCTEX from Clark South going to Porac has been closed in order to ensure the safety of motorists, said BCDA. Traffic flow to and from the Subic area and surrounding towns is currently being rerouted, while technical assessment on the damage is ongoing.

However, the SCTEX Clark-Tarlac section remains open to all vehicular traffic, said BCDA.

Like the SCTEX, the NLEX is run and managed by the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC), which is subsumed under Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), a company led by businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan. InterAksyon.com is the news portal of TV5, which Pangilinan chairs.

As a result of the breach, all types of vehicles—from motorcycles to heavy trucks—are prevented from crossing the bridge.

Vehicles going to “areas of Clark south leading to the Porac exit of SCTEX are only ones affected,” Mary Joy Valencia, who is with Traffic Control of NLEX, stressed in an interview over Radio DZBB. She added that alternate routes are still open.
