    The Major Contributor's thread...

In behalf of the other mods, allow me express my sincerest congratulations to our new Major Contributors hbt, liv, roadguide2000 and jspalaroan (hope i did not miss out on anyone, if i did, my apologies at magparamdam kayo ). Keep up the good work...

The reason why i want to start this thread is i would like MC's (major contributors) to share with JMs (junior members) and C's (contributors) tips on how to become an MC without really trying... malabo ba? Let me rephrase that... by doing something that they loved to do and believing in this bayanihan effort of improving our roadguide map to benefit all members. Hopefully your stories will inspire others attain MC status...

What's the difference between a C and MC btw? According to boss Jan, C's get the unlock code for version 1.xxx only but MC's get to enjoy the unlock code for ALL versions forthcoming...

      To Junior Members and Contributors,

I am only talking about contributing from road and polygon tracings from Google Earth. I am currently out of the country, that’s why I can not contribute tracks and waypoints, although I could gather some during my semi-annual vacation.

I don't really know the criteria how to be upgraded from Contributor to Major Contributor. I mean I don't know what are the bases; is it the number of posts or uploads per day, the average size per upload, the total size of upload per map version or the total number of roads and polygons? Let's ask the Moderators and Jan. Sure one of the above.

      Anyway, in my case, for version 1.07 alone, I did the following;
      1. Average uploads per day - 8 per day
      2. Average size per upload - 30 Kb/upload
      3. Average number of roads - 30 roads/upload
      4. Average number of polygon - 12 polygons/upload
      5. Total aggregate size in version 1.07 - +/-10Mb

I believe the above was too extreme. Let’s invite the moderators to moderate it and give the aspiring MCs some leverage, for those aspiring MCs that don’t have enough time like me to do the tracing/mapping and posting.

I really don’t know which from the above was the governing factor, sure one of them, but from what I know you must have the following.

      1. Firstly, you must have the spirit to contribute (bayanihan), an inborn traveler or a die hard hobbyist,
      2. Secondly, you must have plenty of spare time (working 8~5 and far from family or may be a single),
      3. The last but not the least, you must have ways and means. I mean you have a computer with big memory, fast internet connection, several softwares, i.e. Google Earth, EasyGPS, Mapsource, Trackmaker, Wikimapia and of course your contributor’s map for counterchecking your map before uploading. All of the above software and webpage must be opened at the same time thus your computer must have a big memory.

For me being an OFW, working from 8 to 5 and staying near the job site has a lot of time to spare. That’s a major factor. To reduce the boredom, I must have something to do like this thing, mapping. Anyway, after some period of time, once the new version came out its pay day. When you see your contributions included on the new map, its high heaven.

Okey guys, it’s too long a tip already, gather data and contribute responsibly.

        Major Contributor

Wow! Sir Roadguide2000, that is really something.

I really envy those who can find time to contribute. I used to contribute quite a bit, but things changed when I got loads of new work assignments and at the same time started my 1st business venture.

This is actually my first time to visit the site again after a very long period of absence.

In the past few months, I've recorded several tracks and even took screenshots of areas where routing needs to be corrected...but never really found time to upload them. In fact, I haven't been able to upgrade the map in my Nuvi205 yet. And now 1.07 is already available. I don't know if those data would still be useful, considering that I'm still using an old map version that's already obsolete.

I wish to be able to contribute again...and one day reach the MC status.

To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right.
I believe to be a MC one has to put your heart in this and just work, knowing it is not just for yourself but to all people filipinos or foreign.

@Roadguide2000 - great tips and thanks for sharing .

@hbt - as usual you've given us something to ponder about this nice morning...

Another factor that might also be considered so one can be upgraded to MC status is one's active presence in the forums, not only in welcoming newbies but in the willingness to share their time and expertise in answering forum questions. Of course, your data contribution is a major factor, sometimes maybe not in terms of quantity but in the quality of the waypoints, tracks and corrections submitted and the consistency.

One doesn't really need to try harder to become an MC... for as long as you have the dedication and desire to help in every which way you can... that's what fuels our passion... to make our ROADGUIDE MAP as PERFECT as can be.

                    Hi sir matanglawin,

Don't worry so much now, by the time that your new business is already running smoothly then surely you will have good chances to contribute again. I am very sure that you will find some ways to take advantage of your new work assignment and business venture to satisfy your desire to contribute again and eventually become a Major Contributor. New work assignment means new places. New places means a lot of new tracklogs and new way points.

If you don't have enough time to upload now, save them for the future when you have time already.

I wish you good luck on your new business venture.

                        To summarize it:

Its all about HEART and PASSION.

If one will understand and have these, he can succeed in any endeavor.

And one of the fact that drives me is the thought of improving our nation's tourism if we will have a perfect map (although it would never be perfect).

                          I'm not a Major, but...

I take my device with me wherever I go and if I can find just a small piece of roadway that hasn’t been recorded, I snag it and send it in. I’m not a major contributor, but I have a passion for stuff like this and have even spoken to a few potential newbies that know of the site and would like to start contributing. I will help them in any way that I can.

2 observations from my short time here as a Contributor:

Tracings: when I take my recordings and overlay them on Google Earth, they’re off. That is, the data doesn’t overlay exactly on the GE imagery. Because of this difference, I am a bit leery to trace things in Google Earth where I’m working (south of Cebu City) because of an accuracy issue that I see. Comments welcomed on a new thread, because I have time to trace.

Other people’s data: Before 1.07 came out, I downloaded and opened other people’s contributions. I learned quite a bit about how to edit and submit by viewing those files, and I know I submit much better data as a result. This specific one comes to mind: http://roadguide.ph/forums/showpost....2&postcount=11. I learned a lot from that file, alone. I understand that if contributions are being mismanaged or plagiarized, that they’re now restricted from being opened by regular guys like me. Not looking for any current policy to be changed, but I wouldn’t mind being able to see a select contribution now and then that is deemed a good “how to” example. It makes my work better. Maybe a thread could be opened for that.

the best is tracing combined with gps tracks. will start a new thread. but for south cebu you can upload the traces like that because i have enough tracks from there to recalibrate them myself...

point taken and will be so done. (once we get around to it)

The principle here is an off tracked road is better than no road at all, anyway at the end, you follow your own decision which road you think is right.
