IMHO, for the foreseeable future, there will be a market for a stand-alone unit. I'm thinking of the trekker, the outdoors-man, the guy (gal) who likes to get someplace on foot far, far away from civilization. I believe that is still recognized as a market, albeit a small or shrinking one, for stand-alone GPS units, not ones that are tied to smart phones and tablets. Maybe when the earth gets paved, we will no longer see the need for a stand-alone unit.

There will always be a market for standalone gps units. Unless battery gets better for smartphones. I, for example, prefer a standalone unit despite me having access to a smartphone with internet access. There are places still not covered with internet and/or a proper telecom signal and a standalone gps shines on these specific instances. However for metro use, smartphone wins. But for true outdoor adventures, our gps with local map shines. I have to admit though that this market is dwindling compared to before.
