    No worries, ask away.

You can ask here in your intro thread or in the topic where you have a question.

Have you visited the FAQ and "how to" site?

      Hi Arvin

I have Nuvi 255W pretty dang old but just like me

To add to that it has version 6.0 and Garmin say i can update to 7.6 Wheeww my unit missed a lot hehehe.
With this update i'm having 2nd thoughts to upgrade , kinda scared if RG Map will not be permitted to be installed or the hardware itself can't handle the firmware upgrade just like our smart phone. Considering this unit is like 5yrs old

Dang old, but reliable is still better than cutting edge but buggy!

I have never upgraded my Garmin PND myself, just like I still use WinXP on my office computer

The reason is that I am afraid of the horror stories of trying to update something and bricking the device, or at the least spending 12 hours fixing the stuff. Happened to me with my kid's iOS devices.

If ever you do decide to update your firmware, RG map will still work on those 99% sure.

You might want to see if you can turn on 1sec tracks so that if you find a road that is still not in the RG map you can contribute that using 1Sec tracks:

But take your time of course.

Just verified, i have the easter egg thing.

Maybe i will stick with the current firmware since i have no issue with it and can do what it is made for
although the response of the unit is really sluggish but hey the user is slow too so no issue

That is cool that you have easter egg in your unit.

Learn how to use it, as you can also contribute 1sec tracks for "verification" as a contribution. It means you can take 1sec tracks wherever you go and upload them as contribution too.

Of course the biggest use for them is if you find an area where the road is not yet in the map, then turn on 1sec tracking and upload that in the new track contribution.

Speaking of roads, one thing that many newbies might miss, is that Road names for previously unnamed roads are a goldmine for contributions. For example using the Demo map, look at subdivisions in you area that still have unnamed roads, if you are able to ask permission to enter and save the road names, that would be a lot of road names already

Op course Unkel we are always ready to help newbies right?

I also always try to point out some tips which might not be obvious with newbies and contributors alike.
Specially road names in Subdivisions, whenever I see a subdivision that has no road names in the map yet, it's like I have struck gold

A lot of newbies also forget to start where they are experts in... their own neighborhood. I have said this a few times, I would scold myself whenever I see a new Waypoint/POI in my area that I have not noticed. Just last week I noticed that the mall in my area is already operational and has lots of new POIs I will be uploading those later

                  How to name unamed road

                  Hi

Just want to ask some help on how to properly name a unnamed road via BaseCamp.

I've been looking to the forum thread but failed to found some example/instructions (i maybe looking in a wrong directions)

                    Good morning John,
There is no defined wp made to show a street name, therefore i create a WP in the middle of a road, and I use a spurious wp from the selection in Basecamp, normally a green dot, now if the road name is extended, you will find that if wish to show the road in each branch and you create the name for then BC will not accept it, so after the name you add full stop or period, this allows the extra duplicate name.
Or you you can make the road as a track and then add the name.
                    Its your choice John.

                    John, Lipa.

If I may suggest an alternative.

                      1. Like John I too use a Waypoint to mark road name in GPS in the middle of the road, not at an intersection.

                      2. In basecamp or in my case Mapsource, when I see the WP with the road name, I use the Route tool to mark where the road starts and where it ends, and then rename the route as the Road name. This one shows a more specific start and finish for the road name.

                      3. Like what John said, you can also use the Track draw tool to draw a track on the road and rename the track as the new Road name. That works as well.

                      4. If the new road is not yet in the map, you can also use the Track draw over the 1sec tracks you got and that new Track you drew can be renamed as the new road name.

The key here is hopefully the RG mapper/admin knows exactly where the road name starts and where it ends. Sometimes there are roads that are continues but changes names in the middle.

                        Posting the suggestion/observation here John,

I noticed that you are sending your contributions one file at a time.

The Admins have requested (based on FAQ and How to pages) that if possible please lump your contribution in one file per category per Upload.

                        example:
Maybe 5 or more Waypoints in a file for waypoints upload.
1 or more Track edits in one file per upload.
                        etc. etc.

This means it might be a good idea to compile all your waypoints correction for one week before uploading. Same thing with Track edits, etc. etc.

It will also make it easier for you to compile all your contributions as a link when you request unlock code from "The judge".

This is the hardest part for me to do with Basecamp, as for Mapsource I can easily cut and paste them together, for Basecamp I am still trying to figure out how to separate all my contributions and compile them into categories (waypoints, track edits, new track, etc) and then uploading them as separate files.

Keep in mind, if you have tracks in your waypoints contribution upload, the tracks will not be seen or processed, unless you upload them in the tracks upload, it has something to do with automation process. I see your doing it correctly anyway... you might just get confused with my suggestion to lump each category together before uploading. less work for the Admins. I'm sure they will point it out sooner or later if you continue to do it
