    Newbie from Las Piñas

    Hi guys,

Stumbled across roadguide while choosing a gps unit to purchase and, I must say, I really do respect what you guys are doing for the community. This kind of cooperative effort is so rare these days and the manner at which you are running this project is a real breath of fresh air.

Once I decide which gps unit to purchase, I look forward to contributing to this community as well.

    More power to you guys!

Thanks for the warm welcome. After spending some time reading your forums, I am impressed at how helpful this community is, and your web decorum is second to none.

That having been said, I would like your advice on which unit to get - the only thing I am particular about is the screen size, so I'm limiting my options to 5-inch screens only. Based on what I've seen, the Nuvi 1450/1490 seem to be good value for money units, but I hope to hear some suggestions from you guys. I have never used a gpsr so I am wide open to your comments and suggestions.

This will only be used in-car as I intend to get a smaller weather resistant unit for biking, hiking, and pedestrian use. I am also looking only at what is available from Amazon - been using them for years, and they have never messed up an order.

Thanks again, and I look forward to your suggestions.

i would look for an unit with bluetooth capability or something with voice recognition for hands free calling.
            very useful for me
pro- coz it doesnt distract you while driving.
con- everybody sitting inside the car can hear you.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend.

              1490 will fit this requirement.
i say its a good choice if you have no budget constraint.

for me a garmin gpsr with these feature aside fr bluetooth:
              - where am i
              - multiple routing
              - 1s tracks

                Hello southern

I'm a newbie from Las Pinas as well. I've posted in the other threads though I haven't yet in the introductions subgroup.

I also just recently got my Garmin GPS and these guys have been very helpful in my decision on what model to get. The standard map had worked very nicely on my unit, and I'm also looking forward to using the contributor's map sometime in the future.

Looking at the Garmin site, the only real difference between the 1490 and the 1450 seems to be that the 1490 has Bluetooth and a traffic receiver (which is useless here anyway.) Since my car's HU already has BT, I guess that tips the scale towards the 1450.

I like the price of the 1450 - only USD 133.50 right now on Amazon, and USD 99.99 for a refurb unit.

Now for another tricky question - If I wish to be a contributor, is the 1450 a good tool for the job? My budget is really in the USD 200-300 range, so I'm willing to pay a little more if I get a better tool. Assuming a USD 300 tops budget, are there any other units you guys suggest I also look at?

                  Thanks again.

While waiting, I will install Navitel on my iPad, will let you guys know how it turns out.

                    Hi ranmamaru,

Great to find someone in my neck of the woods. I wouldn't mind linking up sometime for a few beers and bad jokes. I work from home, so I am always in the south. Hope to get a chance to meet you and other RG guys soon.

i find this very useful http://gpstracklog.com/compare/garmi...mparison-chart

if you want to meet the RG guys, i suggest you to join the EBs.
you just misses our EB last tuesday in makati.
playboy reiji is planning to have one in subic this september.
                      chek out the events section.

as for the tool, any garmin or navitel compatible unit will do. its more of the hobby hard work to achieve the contributor status.

                      oh BTW, welcome to RG

                        hbt,

Thanks for the welcome. Seems like a cool hobby - now I have something other than cars to geek-out on.

Too bad I missed the last EB, I found RG a day too late, next time I guess.

Decided on the 1450 from Amazon shipped via Johnny Air, should have my unit in a week or so. In the meantime, I've installed Navitel on my iPad with many thanks to the how-to's on this site.

                        Thanks again...

Give us feedback on the going rate with with JAC these days with a Nuvi. There is a thread on freight forwarding here:http://roadguide.ph/forums/showthread.php?t=3117. As i remember USD28 shipping & handling plus another USD25 customs fee on arrival right?. Since July 2011 My-ShoppingBox no longer accepts items with lithium batteries(which is pretty much a lot). They had to return my ordered Nuvi back to Amazon. This use to be a cheaper alternative for me since they only charge the shipping fee with no customs charge.

                            @registrar

Ive been using JAC for over 15 years now and no problems at all. Just shipped a car 1-din head unit purchased from amazon and shipped through JAC last week and cost me P1,400, so im expecting about the same for my Nuvi.

Will post the rest of my JAC comments on the shipping thread.

Another newbie from the south here (Sta. Rosa, Laguna), I just ordered the 1490T from Amazon.

I have been reading the forum so that I can make the unit work in the Philippines.

Thanks guys for the good work and I hope I can contribute too.
