what is the purpose of the usb on a nuvi? is it plainly a data transfer thing or does it also charge the battery?

However, you can't just use a USB charger with 1A rating to sync and charge the nuvi at the same time.Comment

My 500 is a bit different. When I plug the USB data transfer cable into my PC and Nuvi, it acts as both data transfer and battery charger at the same time. I routinely recharge my 500 from the PC after a few hours of battery-only operation.
The 500 model is different than other Nuvi's in that it has a user-replaceable battery, just like a cell phone, and the battery is good for about 8 hours of continuous use.Experiencia DocetComment
